Nothing Ear(1): Everything You Need to Know | Adnan Mohammed Osman | Electronics Daily

From the very first look you can see some pretty unique stuff. If you have been watching the Instagram threads of Nothing you must be also hyped. Former founder of One plus, Carl Pei has launched Nothing and announced the Nothing Ear(1) at July 2 on Instagram. It is a pair of 99$ wireless earbuds with active noise cancellation and also supports wireless charging. The best thing about them is 100% their unique transparent design. The overall shape is pretty familiar which basically looks like Apple Air-Pods Pro but with a shorter stem. It is very comfortable and super light, only about 4.7 grams per ear-pods.

The case is also partially clear and also have some nice features that are also good in this price range. The earbuds fit in at the corners with magnets and there is also a matching red dot with the right earbud. They snap into place real good and the magnets are really good and you can literally see them in the stem, so that's cool. The case has a USB C-port but also supports wireless charging. There is a LED light indicator to let us know whether it is charging and I must say it is super responsive. In the middle of the case there is a semi circle, which can be a great way for you to hold the case on your hand. Overall it is a big case definitely not as compact as something like Galaxy Buds Plus or Pixel Buds A Series which are both at this price range.

Now the important things, How do they sound? They sound pretty good comparing the price and also having active noise cancellation but of course you can not get the same sound quality from this as other higher priced earbuds. But these 11.6 mm drivers definitely sound much better with noise cancellation on, where it really brings out much more bass and sound. But overall they sound like any other normal 100$ earbuds. The volume power is very good.

There are two levels of noise cancellation, light and maximum. Though there might not be much change between them. Gives great performance with low noise like air conditioning or road noises, still higher frequency like hissing sounds slip through. There is also IPX4 splash resistance and have Bluetooth 5.2 for better battery life. there are touch controls on the stems of the buds that still works fantastic even when you are sweaty or rained on. You can switch between noise cancellation modes by a long press and swipe up and down the stem to change volumes plus execute different amount of taps to control playbacks.

Talking about performance duration, it has a 31 mAh battery installed in it and the battery life is about 4hr with ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) on and 5/6 hours without ANC on and also get up to 24-34 hours in the case. There is an ear(1) app for iOS and Android. Though the app doesn't have a lot of features but it lets you control sound parameters and touch controls. You can customize triple taps or what a long tap does on each of these earbuds from the app. Also a dark theme option is available in the app and a find my earbud feature which might be very handy to some people.

Now if you thought that these buds can beat those 300$ dollar flagship wireless buds out there, you clearly have fallen in the hype-trap. The Nothing Ear(1) have decent sound quality and a good noise cancellation, but the bar is pretty high against those flagship buds. But, without comparing, is it worth to buy the Nothing Ear(1) earbuds? I would say Yes, you get a solid design and decent sound quality for a price of 99$ dollar. Again at this price, it is 100% not all about the sound quality but also about the looks, feels and of course nice features. In that sense, the Nothing Ear(1) definitely got the attention of potential users.
